The History of Pennsylvania Told Through Historic Photographs
The birthplace of both the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution,
Pennsylvania is steeped in history as deep as that of the United States as a whole. Founded in 1682, Pennsylvania would see America’s first public protest against slavery, its first colonial constitution to ensure freedom of conscience, and a daguerreotype image of Philadelphia’s Central High School
that remains the oldest known photograph taken anywhere in the United States. That landmark image is among the many highlights of Historic Photos of Pennsylvania.
The nearly 200 photos in this volume showcase Pennsylvania’s natural beauty, industrial might, and advances in education and the arts. Farmlands and waterfalls, coal mines and steel mills, museums and universities—all contribute to the tapestry that is Pennsylvania’s landscape and history. Most of
all, the images in this collection pay tribute to the people who have made up Pennsylvania’s storied past, even as the state looks ahead to a hopeful future.
“I hope the photos in this collection will inspire people to look more deeply into Pennsylvania’s past and hopefully find something, or someone with whom they feel a connection,” says Beardsley. “I hope readers find a commonality of experience and place in these photos.”
Historic Photos of Pennsylvania is part of Turner Publishing’s Historic Photos series. These books, highlighting the history of the great cities, landmarks, events, and key figures across America, have been acclaimed as a staple in the collection of anyone who loves history.

The History of Long Island Told Through Historic Photographs
The largest island in the continental United States, Long Island comprises Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk counties. With a rich history that has included American Indian tribes such as the Massapequa, Shinnecock, and Quogue, among others; colonists from England and the Netherlands; and immigrants who arrived by way of Ellis Island, Long Island thrives today on its wealth of industry, agriculture, natural beauty, and the contributions of its nearly eight million residents.
Those very attributes are showcased in this volume, Historic Photos of Long Island. From the lighthouse at Montauk, to the growth of the Long Island Rail Road, to the factories of Long Island City, the breadth, contrasts, and vitality of the Island through a century of its life shine forth in the black-and-white images collected here. Windmills and tide mills, potatoes and oysters, aviators and fishermen—all are a part of the Island’s history, and all are represented vividly among the nearly 200 images seen in Historic Photos of Long Island.
“This book is unique for two reasons,” explains publisher Todd Bottorff, “the high quality of printing and binding and the fact that many have never seen these photos.”
